6 Most Memorable Technical Glitches In Today’s Concerts

No matter how well-organized an event is, technical glitches can still make things go wrong. These snags happen every so often that international concerts are no exception. These glitches can derail music events, but nevertheless, make them unforgettable.

Here are six of the most memorable technical glitches in today’s concerts:

1. Technical Difficulties at Kanye West’s Hollywood Bowl Concert – Sep. 26, 2015

The kickoff of rapper Kanye West’s two-night set of “808s and Heartbreak” Hollywood Bowl concert may not have gone quite as smoothly as planned. In a video obtained from the concert, West was forced to cut the music and addressed the situation saying, “This is the best dress rehearsal I’ve ever had”. Reports claimed the glitch apparently occurred as a result of his lack of preparation as the “Heartless” hitmaker was allegedly late to the rehearsal prior to the concert.

2. Microphone and Backing Track Cut Off at Adele’s Birmingham Concert – April 2, 2016

Adele’s performance at the Genting Arena in Birmingham was threatened by technical difficulties when the sound stopped working midway through a song. During the chorus of “All I Ask,” the singer’s microphone and backing track are suddenly cut off. She was then rescued by her devoted fans who stepped in to sing the lyrics until the issue was resolved. The British superstar later explained that her earpiece continued to work throughout the ordeal and that she wasn’t aware of the problem.

Early in February, Adele’s performance of the same tear-jerking ballad at the Grammy Awards also suffered sound problems. Despite the glitch, she received a standing ovation for braving through her performance even though her microphone had stopped working.

3. Out of Tune Piano at Coldplay’s Glastonbury Headline Performance – June 26, 2016

Technical issues during Coldplay’s Glastonbury Festival headline performance forced Chris Martin to play solo. The band launched into performing “Everglow,” but the frontman noticed there was a technical issue with his piano’s tuning. With the crowd booing to the prospect of missing out on the song, the 39-year old decided to perform solo with just a piano and microphone. The rest of the band was reintroduced for the next track, “Clocks.”

4. Earpiece Malfunction at Mariah Carey’s New Year’s Eve Performance – Dec. 31, 2016

Mariah Carey’s New Year’s Eve performance was going well until it was plagued by some technical problems. Both revelers at the Time Square and TV viewers watching Dick Clark’s “New Year’s Rockin’ Eve with Ryan Seacrest” were treated to an awkward five-minute performance. Many couldn’t hear the singer, particularly her 1991 hit single, “Emotions” performance. The singer said a malfunctioning earpiece was to blame, causing her to abruptly stop singing although her dancers continued performing on stage.

5. Dead Microphone at Metallica and Lady Gaga’s Performance at Grammy Awards – Feb. 12, 2017

Metallica’s appearance with Lady Gaga at the 59th Grammy Awards turned into something of a disaster when James Hetfield’s mic wasn’t turned on. This left him barely audible for the first part of their collaboration on “Moth into Flame” and forced him to improvise and share the mic with Gaga.

6. Multiple Sound Cuts at Radiohead’s Performance at Coachella – April 16, 2017

Radiohead’s Coachella performance early in April experienced multiple sound cuts, forcing the English rock band to walk off the stage twice. Reports claim the sound glitches began only three songs into the set, but only got worse during the band’s 2007 hit song, “15 Step,” resulting in cutting out the final two minutes of the track. The rest of the night seemed uncertain as the same problem recur when the band started performing “Let Down.”
