‘Penny Pad’: PENNYWILD Releases Dance Pad MIDI Controller

Introducing the Penny Pad

A consistent evolution in the MIDI controllers is nothing new in dance music. This tool that generates and transmits Musical Instrument Digital Interface (MIDI), it triggers sounds or beats by using a specific interface, with the keyboard as the most common type of controller.

After trying out some other movement-oriented equipment, PENNYWILD, has gone far beyond the basic as she collaborated with finger drumming champion, Coby Ashpis, to produce a MIDI controller that uses a dance pad–the Penny Pad. Penny Pad uses a dance pad that is reminiscent of the ones used in Dance Dance Revolution (DDR), which converts the foot pressure into MIDI beats.

While the DJ equipment is still in a prototype stage, PENNYWILD is already looking into developing and creating a beta version of the Penny Pad. The artist who is Melanie Penny Wildman in real life has hinted that she will be releasing an EP in March, with its tunes created with the controller.

“Dance has always been a reactive expression, and I feel like it’s time dance is a generative expression,” PENNYWILD tells Billboard.

“The entire concept of my upcoming EP in conjunction with the Penny Pad is that movement breeds music. It doesn’t have to be the other way around,” she adds.
